Miguel Antonio Otero

Hello, Otero County, Colorado became a county March 26, 1889 and was originally part of Bent and Crowley counties. The county was named for Miguel Antonio Otero, who later became Territorial Governor of New Mexico in 1897. I am not certain if this is connected to your line or not. I live near Otero County and would be happy to assist if possible. I do not speak spanish, but I would be very interested in having your message translated. I am interested in all of Colorado's history. Good luck,

Valorie Millican

------- Miguel Otero He was born in 1829 in the village of Valencia, New Mexico when it was still part of Mexico. His parents were of Spanish and Morish descent. As a youth Don Miguel was tremendously interested in education and his father had hoped he would become a Catholic priest. The young Otero studied at St. Louis University until the Mexican War started in 1846, when he was called home. The next spring the elder Otero gave the young man the choice of schools in which to complete his education. Don Miguel chose a Protestant school in Fishkill, New York, because he wanted to learn the difference in religions. He remained a Catholic, but gave up plans for priesthood. In later years he bacame a Mason in New Mexico, finding nothing in Masonry that conflicted with Catholicism. Otero was at Fishkill for several years, part of the time as a teacher in the academy. Upon adivce of his principal, he took up law, which was studied in those days by becoming associated with an established law firm. After being with legal firms in New York and St. Louis for some time, Otero obtained his license in St. Louis in 1852 and he then returned to New Mexico to begin practice. Almost immediately Miguel was appointed private secretary to William Lane, second civil govornor of New Mexico under United States government. When only 24 years of age, Miguel Otero was elected to the New Mexico Legislature, being the candidate of the progressive American Party. His brother, Antonio Jose Otero, was chosen one of New Mexico's first district judges. In 1855 Miguel Otero was the first native New Mexican elected as a deligate to the Congress of the United States. He had been appointed by President Pierce as the United States district attorney for New Mexico, but declined so he could seek the high position of representative. He won over the strong opposition of a powerful anti-American, priest-ridden party, according to one historian. His campaign was a member of the Democratic Party. During his tenure, from 1855 until 1861, Otero worked hard to secure a transcontinental railroad. He made efforts to get New Mexico admitted to the Union as a state, but failed largely because the New Mexico Legislature did not call a constitutional convention. President Abraham Lincoln appointed Otero secretary of New Mexico Territory, but he only served from April to September of 1861. During those months the Civil War began and Congress refused to confirm his appointment because of his sympathies with the South. Otero remained in New Mexico during the was and started various business ventures. When strife ended, he moved to Levenworth, Kansas., and established a mercantile business that, from 1864 until 1868 had many ramifications of distrubution through the West. As the Kansas Pacific Railroad moved westward, so did Otero. Among his businesses was the wholesale merchandising firm of Otero, Sellers & Company. It was started at Hays City, Kansas., when the new town was the terminus of the railroad. Later Kit Carson, Colorado became the end of the line, and for a time was a mighty busy place for exchange of goods. Otero's compoany shared the business with Chick, Brown & Co., and Webster & Cuniffe. The Santa Fe and the Kansas Pacific had a race for the Arkansas Valley trade. From its Kansas City-Denver line, the Kansas Pacific built southwest from Kit Carson to Las Animas and La Junta. The Kansas Pacific eventually lost the battle for business to the Santa Fe and then removed its tracks between La Junta and Kit Carson. Otero figured in this because he switched his freight business from the Kansas Pacific to the Santa Fe. When the Santa Fe halted its line temporarily in 1875 on the site of La Junta, Otro was one of the principal organizers of the terminus town. It bore the name of Otero for three years. Otero moved his warehouses from Kit Carson to the new community. The train that carried his buildings also bore a depot 12 by 14 feet, a water tank and two old warehouses of Manzanares & Co., a wool commission business. After the Kansas Pacific abandoned La Junta in 1878, the Santa Fe showed so much strength that it dictated many community changes, including renaming the place La Junta. The order came from W. B. Strong, Santa Fe president, effective July 4. La Junta is a Spanish word meaning junction and refers to the meeting of the Colorado and transcontinental lines of the railroad at that point. La Junta was not incorporated until April 1881. In 1889 the area had developed sufficiently so that it was removed from Bent County and a new county was formed and named for Miguel Otero. La Junta was made the county seat. It was ironic that this division should leave the historic old Bent's Fort in Otero County instead of Bent County. Between 1875 and 1880 Otero ( La Junta) was a livey place. The saloons and dance halls were working around the clock. When one of the new places was opened the owner went down to the Arkansas River and threw away the key--then treated the town. Any tenderfoot wno dropped into the community and showed a dime became an object of curiosity, because a two-bit piece was the least that would buy anything, including cigars and drinks. All the frieght for New Mexico and as far as Tuscon, Arizona was unloaded from the railroad cars at La Junta and taken by wagon across the plains and mountains. Sometimes they were as many as 15 wagon trains in La Junta at one time, with 20 to 30 wagons in each outfit. The teamsters of each group arranged their wagons in circular corrals. The mules were fed corn and turned out to graze. The freighters built their campfires, cooked their suppers and became a part of the night life. Otero had a profitable business in handling trainloads of merchandise, acting as wholesaler for many eastern firms.

Re: Your Otero County Query

I do not know anything more about Miguel Otero than what I found and sent to you.

I was born and grew up in La Junta, Otero county and I do not remember any one by the last name of Otero there. I understand that the records of people are available of Spain connections but I do not know anything about their research as I have not done any for anyone from there. Did you see the Public Broadcast series of "Ancestors"? There was one person who did some research about the areas that you need help with. So I know that it is possible. There might be more about Miguel Otero in the Colorado history. If I were you I would write to the City clerk in La Junta and ask if they have any Otero burials. She has that information on the computer. You need to send a self addressed stamped envelope along with your request. That would be a start. She would have the listing for the Fairview cemetery in LaJunta. Then I would do the same thing for Rocky Ford, Colo. Each town has their own city clerk. That is all I can think of at this time.

Let me know how this turns out.

Asunto: Re: Familia Otero

Suerte y saludos,

--Jose Maria
